Island Hopper Variable Speed Trolling Motors for Hobie® Mirage Kayaks
.
When choosing a trolling motor for your Hobie Kayak, a decision must be made regarding the battery you will be using to operate a trolling motor with what's available on the market such as conventional wet Deep Cycle, AGM and Gel or Lithium-Ion Batteries. Conventional batteries such as Deep Cycle, AGM and Gel are exclusively used with conventional trolling motors, they tend to be heavier with shorter range, but much cheaper in price and deliver regulated energy. In recent years, Lithium-Ion batteries have become a favorite amongst kayakers, primarily, because of their weight, reserve amperage, and lasting 3 -5 times longer on the water than conventional deep cycle marine batteries. However, what's omitted from the literature and specs about these super lithium-ion batteries, is that they were designed to store as much voltage from solar panels and are unregulated capable of accepting and storing 18 volts as well as, delivering 12.8-16.0 volts. Therefore, when used without a voltage regulator, they tend to shorten the lifespan of conventional trolling motors rather quickly. In order for LiFePO4 batteries to be used, they require a brushless trolling motor with an integrated circuit board which acts as a voltage regulator and speed controller, along with a heavy gauged battery cable, lithium-ion plug and an auto reset fuse.
